Book Thief Blog #1

What really surprised me was the relationship between Liesel and Hans. In the begining, Liesel was hesitant around her new parents, but soon Hans had grown on her and their bond was growing rapidly. This grown is shown when Liesel is forced to call her parents "mama" and "papa", but she had trouble calling her new mother "mama". Normally in stories, its the mom thats close to the girl and its the dad thats the mean one, which really caught me by surprise because it was a unique difference.

  1. Yeah. Throughout the story I noticed their relationship as well. I really enjoyed seeing their relationship grow as she grew comfortable with her new “Papa.” She was closest to her Papa, Hans, because of the things they shared together. He was the first one to connect with Liesel as she came to meet her new adopted parents. Through literature and music they came together as they read together every night and occassionally played the famed accordion. Hans kicked off her progressive book stealings. He was just such a simpathetic character in the story that really became close with the lost girl that needed help. They “loved” each other. I don’t know if Leisel really loved her Mama or at least not as much as he Papa. There is something real special between them and as he goes off to war she is a wreck but with the help of Rudy and their relationship it. One of my favorite times in the book is when they share that reading time at night and whether its early in the night or late in the morning they finish their chapter/s. They share this passion for literature and it only grows throughout. Another time in the story is when Papa gets Leisel to read when there are bomb raids in the shelter to keep them from thinking about it. It shows again their passion for what is right and good as they help others and grow in their love and vigor for life.
