Book Thief Blog #3, in responce to oedipus
i completely agree! when she first arrived at the hubermann's house she was quiet, but she soon became fond of hans and soon rosa. hans supported her and was with her the entire book, which is why i believe she had a stronger connection with him than rosa. with max coming along, liesel realizes that jewish people are not bad people, but simply friends. this shows how liesel has grown in many ways, because she was going against the entirety of germany to have a jewish friend. I agree with pompey that she did mature at a quick pace. with the war going on, it was hard for her not to mature quickly.

Book thief blog #2 in responce to marie curie
I agree that max is definitely a very important character in this book. it wasnt until part 7 that i realized how close they were, when the author wrote, "One was a book thief. The other stole the sky." (381). it was this quote that it hit me- even when all of these people were against Jewish people, Liesel cared and loved Max. he was her equal. I also agree with julius that rosa showed much loving towards max. i never would have seen it coming, it surprised me that she could have a heart like this.

Book Thief Blog #1
What really surprised me was the relationship between Liesel and Hans. In the begining, Liesel was hesitant around her new parents, but soon Hans had grown on her and their bond was growing rapidly. This grown is shown when Liesel is forced to call her parents "mama" and "papa", but she had trouble calling her new mother "mama". Normally in stories, its the mom thats close to the girl and its the dad thats the mean one, which really caught me by surprise because it was a unique difference.

Modern art analysis
1. i see a very concerned man sitting by a table.
2. Lines: very harsh lines, mainly very straight. background uses big blocky shapes. lines dont outline anything really, but they just end.
Color: the brighter primary colors around the dark colored man makes him stand out, uses very little color, straight from the tube probably.
Shape: it uses many boxy shapes, like rectangles and boxes, however when it comes to the man and the table the shapes are rounded, so they stick out more.
Space: there's no vanishing point, its 2D.
Lighting: there are probably 2 light sources, because you can see one on the right as there are lighter colors over there, but there is a shadow on the wrong side of his face. so either the artist wanted to make it more dramatic and make the shadow on the wrong side, or there's another light shining on the other side of his face. mainly, the picture is darker on the left and lighter on the right.
Composition: the figure and the shapes balance each other out, so the picture has balance to it and its asymmetrical
i get a mood of concentration, and lots of thought, because the man looks as if he's in deep thought because of his face, but also relaxed because of his body posture.

The Allegory
1. The "shadows" Plato tells us we can't trust as truth are the illusions in our lives that are not completely true. In The Allegory, all of the people in the cave believe that the shadows are real, when only the reader knows they are not. A shadow we face in our everyday lives is the shadow of perfection. All of these models in magazines are all edited to perfection. They're fake, and we believe it as a truth.
2. An example of an online shadow is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page. This website is based off of peoples submissions that may or may not be true. A lot of people use this as a reliable source, they believe it is true. This is why it is a shadow, only the people who help write the Wikipedia page know it's either true or not, and we are stuck to trust that it is true.
3. Shadows impact society greatly. Like I said before, perfection is one of the key shadows in our society. This is because of all of the editing, photoshoping, and airbrushing that is done to these photos. It is a shadow because we believe it as a truth, but really it's anything close to perfection. It hurts many people knowing they can't look like this image of perfection, but really no one can. It's because of this shadow that we can't look perfect.
